Am I Eligible for Gastric Sleeve Surgery?

Understanding the BMI criteria, health requirements, and assessment process for bariatric surgery in Australia.

Who May Be a Candidate for Gastric Sleeve Surgery?

Gastric sleeve surgery is not a cosmetic procedure — it is a clinically recognised treatment for obesity and its associated health conditions. In Australia, eligibility is determined by a combination of factors including your Body Mass Index (BMI), medical history, previous weight loss attempts, and psychological readiness.

Dr Oliver Florica conducts a thorough assessment of every patient to determine whether gastric sleeve surgery is an appropriate and safe option. The following criteria provide a general guide, but individual assessment is always required.

Body Mass Index (BMI) Requirements

BMI is the primary screening tool used to assess eligibility for bariatric surgery. The following categories are generally used:

📊

BMI ≥ 40

Primary Eligibility

Patients with a BMI of 40 or above (classified as severe or morbid obesity) are generally considered eligible for gastric sleeve surgery, even without additional obesity-related health conditions.

📊

BMI 35–39.9

With Comorbidities

Patients with a BMI between 35 and 39.9 who have one or more significant obesity-related health conditions may be eligible. These conditions include type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnoea, hypertension, and severe joint disease.

📊

BMI 30–34.9

Select Cases

In some cases, patients with a BMI of 30–34.9 who have poorly controlled type 2 diabetes or metabolic syndrome may be considered for surgery. This is assessed on a case-by-case basis.

BMI is calculated as weight (kg) divided by height (m) squared. For example, a person who is 170cm tall and weighs 120kg has a BMI of approximately 41.5. Your GP or our team can calculate your BMI during your referral or consultation.

Obesity-Related Conditions That May Support Eligibility

Having one or more of the following conditions in combination with an elevated BMI may strengthen your candidacy for surgery:

  • Type 2 diabetes mellitus
  • Obstructive sleep apnoea
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • High cholesterol (dyslipidaemia)
  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)
  • Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD)
  • Severe osteoarthritis of weight-bearing joints
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Urinary stress incontinence
  • Significant psychological impact of obesity

Other Assessment Criteria

Beyond BMI and health conditions, several other factors are considered:

  • Previous weight loss attempts: You should have made genuine attempts to lose weight through diet, exercise, and/or medical management. Surgery is typically considered when these approaches have not achieved sustained results.
  • Age: Gastric sleeve surgery is generally performed on adults aged 18–65. Patients outside this range may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • Psychological readiness: A psychological assessment may be recommended to ensure you are emotionally prepared for the lifestyle changes required after surgery.
  • No contraindications: Certain medical conditions may make surgery unsuitable or require additional management beforehand.
  • Commitment to follow-up: Long-term success requires ongoing dietary changes, exercise, vitamin supplementation, and regular medical follow-up.
