Gastric Sleeve Recovery

A detailed week-by-week guide to what you can typically expect during your recovery after sleeve gastrectomy.

Understanding Your Recovery Journey

Recovery from gastric sleeve surgery is a gradual process. While every patient heals at a different rate, the following timeline provides a general guide to what you can typically expect. Dr Florica and the team at Sydney Sleeve Surgery will provide personalised recovery instructions and monitor your progress at regular follow-up appointments.

Most patients are pleasantly surprised by how manageable the recovery process is, particularly with laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery. However, it is important to follow all post-operative instructions carefully and attend all scheduled appointments.

Your Recovery Milestones

1

Days 1–3: Hospital Recovery

You will typically remain in hospital for 2–3 nights after surgery. During this time:

  • Clear fluids are introduced within 24 hours (water, clear broth, diluted juice)
  • Pain is managed with medication — most patients report discomfort rather than severe pain
  • You will be encouraged to walk short distances to promote circulation and reduce clot risk
  • A leak test may be performed to ensure the staple line is secure
  • The surgical team will monitor your recovery before discharge
2

Week 1: Home Recovery

Once discharged, the first week at home focuses on rest and hydration:

  • Continue clear fluid diet as directed
  • Sip fluids slowly and frequently — aim for at least 1.5 litres per day
  • Take prescribed medications including pain relief and anti-clotting injections
  • Gentle walking around the house is encouraged
  • Avoid lifting anything heavier than 5kg
  • Some bloating, nausea, or discomfort is normal and typically improves daily
3

Weeks 2–3: Full Fluids & Purées

Your diet progresses and activity gradually increases:

  • Transition from clear fluids to full fluids (protein shakes, smooth soups, yoghurt)
  • Begin introducing puréed foods towards the end of week 2 or start of week 3
  • Most patients can return to light desk work within 2 weeks
  • Continue gentle walking — gradually increase duration
  • First post-operative appointment with Dr Florica typically occurs during this period
4

Weeks 4–6: Soft Foods & Increasing Activity

A significant improvement phase for most patients:

  • Transition to soft, moist foods (scrambled eggs, flaky fish, soft vegetables)
  • Focus on protein-rich foods — aim for 60–80g of protein per day
  • Light exercise such as swimming or stationary cycling may be introduced with your surgeon's approval
  • Energy levels typically improve noticeably
  • Most patients have returned to work by this stage
  • Weight loss is usually noticeable, which can be motivating
5

Weeks 6–12: Regular Diet & Exercise

Your new normal begins to take shape:

  • Gradual transition to regular-textured foods in small portions
  • Learn to chew thoroughly and eat slowly — meals may take 20–30 minutes
  • More vigorous exercise can typically be resumed (gym, jogging, group fitness)
  • Ongoing follow-up appointments to monitor nutrition, weight, and overall health
  • Begin lifelong vitamin and mineral supplementation as directed
6

Months 3–12: Ongoing Progress

The period of most significant weight loss:

  • Most patients experience their fastest weight loss during months 3–9
  • Regular dietitian appointments to optimise nutrition
  • Psychological support may be beneficial as you adjust to body changes
  • Continued regular blood tests to monitor nutritional levels
  • Weight loss typically begins to plateau around 12–18 months
