What Is Gastric Bypass Surgery?

Gastric bypass (Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, or RYGB) is a two-part surgical procedure that creates a small stomach pouch and reroutes the small intestine — producing powerful and sustained weight loss.

First, a small stomach pouch (approximately 30ml) is created from the upper portion of the stomach. The small intestine is then divided and connected directly to this pouch, bypassing the majority of the stomach and the first portion of the small intestine (duodenum).

This dual mechanism — restriction and reduced absorption — makes gastric bypass one of the most effective bariatric procedures available, particularly for patients with type 2 diabetes or severe gastro-oesophageal reflux.

Procedure time: 90–120 minutes  |  Hospital stay: 3–4 days  |  Return to work: 3–4 weeks

Benefits of Gastric Bypass Surgery

⚖️

Maximum Weight Loss

Patients typically lose 70–80% of excess body weight — among the highest of all bariatric procedures — with excellent long-term maintenance.

🩺

Type 2 Diabetes Remission

Up to 80% of patients with type 2 diabetes experience significant improvement or complete remission, often within weeks of surgery — before major weight loss occurs.

🫀

Cardiovascular Benefits

Significant improvements in blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and cardiovascular risk factors are consistently seen following gastric bypass.

😴

Sleep Apnoea Improvement

The majority of patients with obesity-related sleep apnoea see dramatic improvement or complete resolution following gastric bypass.

🔥

Reduces GORD/Reflux

Unlike gastric sleeve, gastric bypass can significantly improve — or resolve — gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), making it the preferred choice for reflux sufferers.

💰

Medicare Rebates Available

Medicare rebates apply when gastric bypass is performed by a qualified bariatric surgeon like Dr Florica FRACS. Private health cover may include hospital fees.

Gastric bypass may be the preferred option for patients who:

  • Have a BMI of 40+ (or 35+ with significant health conditions)
  • Have type 2 diabetes or metabolic syndrome
  • Suffer from gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD)
  • Need maximum weight loss outcomes

  • Are medically fit for general anaesthesia

How Gastric Bypass Works

1

General Anaesthetic

You'll be fully asleep throughout the procedure.

2

Create the Stomach Pouch

A small (~30ml) pouch is created from the top of the stomach using surgical staples.

3

Reroute the Intestine

The small intestine is divided and attached directly to the new stomach pouch.

4

Hospital Recovery

You'll remain in hospital for 3–4 days under Dr Florica's care before discharge.

Gastric Bypass FAQ

Neither procedure is universally superior — the best choice depends on your individual health profile, BMI, medical history, and goals. Bypass tends to be preferred for patients with type 2 diabetes, severe reflux, or those who need maximum weight loss. Dr Florica will discuss the most appropriate option at your consultation.
Many patients experience significant improvement or complete remission of type 2 diabetes — often within weeks of surgery, before major weight loss occurs. Studies show up to 80% remission rates. Individual results vary depending on duration and severity of diabetes.
Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery typically takes 90–120 minutes under general anaesthetic.
Yes. Because gastric bypass reduces absorption in addition to restriction, lifelong vitamin and mineral supplementation is essential. This typically includes vitamin B12, iron, calcium, vitamin D, and a multivitamin. Dr Keeley will manage your supplementation program.
